Background of the Study :
Teachers’ knowledge and attitudes towards physical education are critical factors in the successful implementation of effective physical education programs in schools. In Katsina Local Government Area, Katsina State, educators play a pivotal role in shaping students’ perceptions of physical activity and its importance for overall development. The appraisal of teachers' knowledge and attitudes has garnered significant attention as it is directly linked to the quality of physical education delivered. Recent research highlights that teachers with a positive outlook and a sound understanding of physical education are more likely to adopt innovative teaching methods that enhance student participation and performance (Danladi, 2023). In Katsina, the integration of physical education within the school curriculum is seen as essential for promoting healthy lifestyles and preventing sedentary behaviors among students. However, there is growing concern over the varying levels of expertise and commitment among teachers, which can undermine the effectiveness of physical education programs. Socio-cultural factors, limited professional development opportunities, and a lack of adequate resources contribute to these challenges (Bello, 2024). Moreover, the attitudes of teachers towards physical education often reflect broader societal perceptions about the value of sports and exercise. While some educators view physical education as an integral part of holistic education, others may consider it secondary to academic subjects. This dichotomy has a direct impact on how physical education is taught and received by students. The present study aims to critically appraise teachers’ knowledge and attitudes towards physical education in Katsina Local Government Area, with a focus on identifying the strengths and weaknesses in current practices. By integrating survey data, interviews, and classroom observations, the research seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of the existing status of physical education instruction. The findings will offer insights into the professional development needs of teachers and inform policy decisions aimed at improving the quality of physical education in schools (Danladi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem :
Although physical education is widely recognized for its contribution to the holistic development of students, there is growing concern regarding the adequacy of teachers’ knowledge and their attitudes towards the subject in Katsina Local Government Area. Many educators appear to lack sufficient training and enthusiasm for physical education, which adversely affects the implementation and effectiveness of these programs. Challenges such as limited professional development opportunities, outdated teaching methods, and a general undervaluing of physical education have been cited as contributing factors (Bello, 2024). This situation leads to a disconnect between the intended outcomes of physical education programs and their actual delivery in classrooms. Teachers who do not possess a comprehensive understanding of physical education principles may struggle to design and implement engaging lessons, thereby diminishing students’ interest and participation in physical activities. Additionally, negative attitudes towards physical education may result in reduced emphasis on the subject within the overall curriculum, further marginalizing its importance. The lack of systematic support and training for teachers exacerbates these challenges, resulting in inconsistent quality of instruction across schools in the region. This study seeks to investigate these issues by examining the current levels of knowledge and attitudes among physical education teachers. It will explore how these factors influence teaching practices and student outcomes, and identify potential areas for intervention. By addressing the underlying causes of these challenges, the study aims to propose practical recommendations for enhancing teacher training and improving the overall quality of physical education in Katsina Local Government Area (Danladi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
